A spokesperson for the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority says the onus is on the users of their lands to know when hunting is taking place.
Stewardship, Land and Education Manager Kate Monk said hunters can purchase passes to use the conservation forests or management areas. Those properties have signs warning other recreational users that they may be sharing the property with hunters during certain seasons.
"The busiest times for hunting on our properties would be the main gun hunt season which is the first week of November and the first week of December," she explained. "We advise hikers if they really need to hike in those areas, to wear bright colours and be on the lookout for hunters. But we also have other properties where hunting isn't allowed."
There is no hunting on designated conservation areas, so those would be more appropriate for hiking.
There is a link on the ABCA website to find out when hunting seasons are. Kate Monk said they don't have the capacity to erect signs warning of specific hunting seasons because they own 9,000 acres.
