North Perth Council was updated on some changes made to a new housing development coming to Atwood.
The new development will bring a variety of new living options to Atwood, and some zoning changes were made to part of the project at the council meeting on Monday, March 9.
North Perth Planner Sean Yilmaz said some of the zoning changes were in a future development zone, and they have placed appropriate zoning on those lands for residential development.
"That includes the residential 4 and 5 zones, to permit single detached dwellings, townhouse dwellings and potentially apartment-style dwellings, as well," Yilmaz said.
Some residents attended a public meeting at Monday night's council meeting to voice concern over stormwater management and a possible apartment-style dwelling right on Main Street. Yilmaz says council heard the concerns but were in favour of the zoning change for that piece of land, and allowed it.
"What was once permitted there was a single detached dwelling, semi-detached, up to a four-plex," he said. "With the new zone that was approved by council, they would be permitted to introduce townhouse dwellings, stacked townhouse dwellings or potentially apartment dwellings."
The area on the official project plan that residents were concerned about is known as "Block 15." The new development will bring a variety of new living options to Atwood, with the project being done by Dallmitch Holdings Limited. MHBC Planning is responsible for the layout and implementation of it. Affordable housing options are being encouraged as part of the project which is broken up into numerous phases over the next few years.
