Perth County broadband plan getting connected

The Ontario government says $5.5 million is available to expand broadband internet across Perth County.

The money is for 'Request for Proposals' through Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technnology Inc., or SWIFT. It's part of a commitment ot expand access to broadband internet in rural areas.

Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece announced the plan Wednesday.

"For years we've been saying that rural and small-town Ontario needs better broadband," Pettapiece said. "That's why I'm so pleased to announce, on behalf of Minister Hardeman, the RFP for better broadband infrastructure in Perth County. It's a major investment, which I've been pushing for a very long time," he added. "Families, businesses and farms in Perth-Wellington will be stronger because of it."

In a release, Perth County Warden Jim Aitcheson says the project will be able to better link under served rural communities and level the playing field.

"I am pleased to hear that the Province has announced it will be proceeding with Phase 3 procurements for the continuation of SWIFT projects in our region," said Perth County Warden Jim Aitcheson. "This announcement ensures that Perth County alongside other regions in Southwestern Ontario will be able to better link our underserved rural communities to level the playing field for this critical resource of high-speed connectivity."

The RFP for Perth County closes on November 20th. A contract and service provider agreement would follow.
