A Kincardine woman has put her sewing skills to work and donated over $5,400 to the Huron Shores Hospice.
Shirley Purdie has made over 1,100 masks to protect the community through the COVID-19 pandemic. Her work has also gone international as some masks have made their way across Canada and Europe.
"The orders just kept coming in," stated Purdue in a news release on Monday. "And I'm still in full production as more orders come in."
"The hospice wasn't open yet when I needed the support for my son and I think it is such a wonderful service to have in our community to help those needing care at end-of-life," added Purdue. "I am so happy to support the hospice in this way."
For the hospice, everything helps as fundraisers had to be cancelled and the-Chair of Huron Shores Hospice Cheryl Cottrill expects a loss in revenue of more than 50 per cent through 2020.
"We are honoured to be the recipient of this community donation, at a time when fundraisers have been cancelled and the hospice predicts a greater than 50 per cent loss in revenue for 2020," said Cottrill. "It appears COVID-19 has taken away revenue from the cancellation of our Hike for Hospice, but now also given some of that back through this generous and kind donation from Shirley's customers and those who donated materials. We are so thankful for Shirley's donation, but also thrilled that she has been able to keep our community safe from COVID-19 in this way."
The donation comes during the Great Canadian Giving Challenge for the month of June, in which NPX Innovation has pledged to match donations up to a total contribution of $7,000.
