Walkerton Golf and Curling Club played host to a Residential Hospice Fundraiser golf tournament Tuesday.
Organizer Joe Rys said the day was a huge success with golfers coming to play from many local areas.
"We had 50 tee times available, and we had them all filled several weeks ago, which was terrific. We had teams in from the local area like Walkerton, Hanover and throughout South Bruce/Grey. We had people from Paisley, from Kitchener/Waterloo and even golfers from London."
The event was held to raise money for the new residential hospice coming to South Bruce/Grey. Rys says the recently built Chapman House in Owen Sound has been a very welcome addition to the community, and the money raised yesterday will go toward area expansion.
"People are coming to use the hospice from throughout Bruce and Grey, North Wellington, and other surrounding areas, and there's a need for additional space. So South Bruce/Grey was selected as the next site."
Rys said he anticipates the new hospice will be built within three to five years. In terms of money raised from the tournament, Rys said it's a pretty exciting sum.
"If you wake up in the morning and someone says they're giving you $72,000 I bet you'd be pretty excited! We had 50 teams of four golfers each for 200 players. All of those players raised some money."
The other contributions came in the form of donations from many local businesses and individuals, and donations are still being accepted via a Facebook auction and on the Chapman House site. For more information on how to donate, contact Joe Rys at 519-881-1953.
