County and United Way hire new housing advocate to address homelessness

Huron County and the Perth Huron United Way have partnered in the hiring of a new housing advocate.

Huron County Warden Jim Ginn said addressing chronic homelessness is critical to the health of the community and without stable housing and it's impossible to address health issues, secure income and obtain employment. Ginn said the housing advocate will work with tenants and landlords to ensure the best possible housing outcomes for those experiencing homelessness.

Ginn said Harald Amoah brings vast experience in dealing with homeless people.

"So trying to upgrade their skills, hopefully, so that they can get a job, but even personal skills so that they can look after themselves and if we find them a place to live in that they can maintain those properties and those life skills that they perhaps don't have when they're living homeless."

Ginn added for many homeless people, not having a home is just one of their problems.

"There's just many things stacked against them, just even transportation and a home and maintaining the home and credit ratings and, you know, just the list goes on and on of difficulties, so, you know it's hard for them to get out on their own once they've reached that level."

Ginn said Amoah has a background in both the mental and the skills training part of homelessness.
