Huron Perth Public Health recorded its biggest single-day jump in new COVID-19 cases Monday, with another 34.
The majority of those cases are part of the outbreak at Cedarcroft Retirement Home in Stratford where 31 residents have now tested positive.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Miriam Klassen said they have not yet been able to determine how COVID-19 was initially brought into the home.
There are outbreaks declared at two long-term care homes: Knollcrest Lodge in Perth East and Mitchell Nursing home.
At Knollcrest, an asymptomatic staff member test positive on a retest and at Mitchell Nursing home, an asymptomatic staff member test negative on a retest but they are still running more tests.
“So it does seem that that did not represent an active infection. Nonetheless, we did do some more testing there as well so we’re also waiting for those results," said Dr. Klassen.
There are also now seven active cases in the community and 10 active cases among healthcare workers. Officials say the virus has claimed eight lives in Huron and Perth counties.
“With the increased number of cases, we’re very much concerned with the amount of transmission in our community," said Klassen. "We’re calling on everybody to continue to be vigilant about public health measures.”
