Natural Gas starts flowing to Saugeen First Nation

Huron Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson is marking a milestone for the Natural Gas Expansion Program Saugeen First Nation Project.

She says Enbridge has connected the first 13 customers on the First Nation to natural gas.

She points out the switch to natural gas will save average local households up to 52 per cent off their annual energy bills.

Approximately 90 customers are expected to be connected to natural gas in the Saugeen First Nation community.

“Seeing progress on this project is great news for our region and the Saugeen First Nation,” said Thompson. “We welcome the expansion of natural gas in our community and are thrilled that local customers will finally find some relief through this affordable energy source.”

“Expanding access to natural gas is a game-changer for rural communities as it helps lower the cost of business, boosts job creation and makes life more affordable,” said Bill Walker, Associate Minister for Energy. “Making progress on projects like this one shows that our government is delivering on its promise to put more money in people’s pockets, and making rural and Indigenous communities more attractive for job creation.”

"I am pleased with the Natural Gas project,” said Chief Lester Anoquot, Saugeen First Nation. “We are looking forward to the cost savings on home heating bills, while burning clean natural gas".

"This heating season, our new customers are able to enjoy all the comforts that natural gas has to offer,” said Cynthia Hansen, Executive Vice President & President, Gas Distribution & Storage, Enbridge Inc. “We welcome our new customers from Saugeen First Nation, and look forward to working with the provincial government to bring safe, reliable, affordable natural gas to more Indigenous, rural and northern communities across Ontario.”
