Pilot summer golf program for youth a success in Huron County

A Junior Inter-club Golf Program launched this summer involving the Seaforth, White Squirrel and Sunset Golf Courses was very successful.

Seaforth's Robyn Doig says she and Brittany Nigh from the White Squirrel in Bluewater and Ashley Gravett from Sunset in Goderich have known each other for several years through Junior golf so it was easy for them to get together on the Junior Inter-club idea. Doig says the goal was to help the juniors get more into the game.

“Playing with new people, going to different golf courses and actually playing in competition. It wasn't a super serious event, we just wanted to create an atmosphere where they felt comfortable coming to a different course to play with different people, but still we wanted them to learn some of the rules of the game.”

Doig says the first event was in July and they had almost 35 golfers, so they were very happy with that. She says they've talked about adding more courses in the future, but they've decided to stick with what they had.

“We think we'll probably stick with just three again next year, to make sure we get it really honed in and then I think it would be good. We had some kids that played in all three events, some that just played in two and some that played in only one, which was fine. Ideally we would like them to try to play in as many as possible.”

She says the got a lot of positive feedback this year from the kids and the parents, so they're really looking forward to next year.
