New medical isotope hub established by Bruce Power

Bruce Power has established a new medical isotope hub to assist in the global fight against cancer.

In a release, Premier Doug Ford said that with a strong supply chain, world class labour force, and access to essential infrastructure, the province's isotope ecosystem is at the forefront of the global fight against cancer.

Called the "Ontario Isotope Innovation Hub", the facility will bring together experts across the fields of radiopharmeceuticals and medical isotopes in order to leverage knowledge, capabilities and capacities to develop ideas that can address challenges faced by developers and physicians.

The announcement also includes the unveiling of the Kinetrics Center for Medical Isotopes and Nuclear Chemistry, which it says strengthens the province's position as an international leader in the production of life-saving medical isotopes.

The company also announced the launch of a process for radiopharmaceutical organizations interested in Ontario for isotope production that will run until mid-2023.

"We're extremely proud of Bruce Power's positive impacts on millions of people worldwide, and aside from providing clean, carbon-free electricity for Ontario families and businesses, we also supply medical isotopes internationally, and we're grateful for the strong policy support from the Ontario government that allows us to help power out province, and keep Canada at the forefront in the supply of life-saving medical isotopes," stated Mike Rencheck, Bruce Power President and CEO.

Bruce Power will be the first commercial nuclear reactor in the world to produce Lutetium-177 to the health care community through a partnership with ITM (Isotope Technologies Munich), and also participate in a new partnership with the University Health Network and Prince Margaret Cancer Centre, in support of its theranostics program.
