OPP issue warning to seniors

Wellington OPP issued a warning to seniors.

In a statement released Thursday, police say they have responded to two separate "Grandparent Scams."

In the first case, a 79-year-old Belwood resident was defrauded of $9,000. In the second case, an 81-year-old from Belwood was also taken for $9,000. Both cases were reported to police on October 10th.

The victims told police in each case they were persuaded to withdraw cash from the bank and turn it over to a person who came to their homes. One victim said the suspect who came to pick up the money was a woman and the other victim said it was a man that came for the cash.

Wellington OPP are warning seniors the "Grandparent Scam" targets them by convincing them their grandchild is either hurt or has been arrested and that bail or medical expenses must be paid. Police say you should always be cautious when getting calls or emails demanding money and you should check with family members to validate any claims.

Anyone with any information about this occurrence is asked to contact the Wellington County OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous; you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or submit a tip on-line at www.csgw.tips. You may be eligible for a reward from Crime Stoppers of up to $2,000.
