Owen Sound police inviting the public to Citizen's Police Academy

A new program for citizens that want to learn more about policing is coming to Owen Sound.

The Citizen's Police Academy will be launched by the Owen Sound Police Service on January 18, 2023, allowing those interested to take a deeper dive into police operations in the city.

"It gives people an opportunity to come in and see how policing works here in Canada" said Inspector Dave Bishop. "Anyone interested in a career in policing can come in and have a better frame of reference for how we operate compared to watching television shows like Cops or C.S.I.".

Each night will see experts making presentations on topics like criminal investigations, forensic techniques, police communications, technical surveillance, digital evidence, the courts, and the criminal justice system.

Bishop says a tour of the Owen Sound Police Service's forensic lab will take place, as well as a sit-down with a detective to discuss "the ins-and-outs of a complex investigation."

"Policing is one of those things that people have a lot of curiosity for." said Bishop. "That's why police shows do so well on TV, because it's always something that people harbour a bit of interest in. This program is a great opportunity for anyone looking at a career in policing. It does not replace the education needed to become a uniformed officer, but it can get people closer to alternative civilian positions such as police communicators, as well as records and data clerks."

The program is free, but Bishop noted that they would prefer that candidates work or live in the city, and that anyone participating must be over the age of 18.

The Academy size will be limited to approximately 20 people, although Bishop noted they are hoping to do this a couple of times per year that will allow future opportunities.
