Recent rain helpful, but more needed

Bluewater Mayor and life long farmer Paul Klopp said the rain we've had in the last week or so will certainly help farmers, but no one's taking anything for granted at this point. Klopp added farmers still need more rain.

“Every little bit helps, but this year overall we went into the season reasonably dry and we had quite a dry spell there in June, which we don't normally have, the end of May, first part of June," said Klopp. "So we're not turning any rain away I don't think even though wheat harvest is coming.”

Klopp observed that it does look like most of the corn in the area has made the target of "knee high by the first of July."

"If you were fortunate enough to get a good shot of rain that really was a big help. The rain was pretty timely there for those crops and even our beans that were struggling a bit," Klopp continued. "But we're going to be touch and go if we have if we have a normal summer where we don't get a lot of rain."

Klopp suggested that could make things interesting and he also pointed out in the last couple of years the weather has not been predictable and things farmers used to count on don't always occur when they used to.
