South Huron OPP probing pair of suspected impaired driving crashes

Provincial police in Huron County responded to a pair of serious crashes over the weekend, which police believe may have occurred due to alcohol consumption.

The first crash happened at around 6 p.m. Friday, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said. Officers responded to an area along Dashwood Road, east of Dashwood, for a two-vehicle crash involving a pair of motorcycles.

Through an investigation, police learned the motorcyclists were travelling together to Grand Bend when the lead driver braked, causing the secondary driver to lose control and crash onto the road. The driver who crashed, a 44-year-old from Waterloo, sustained a broken leg. They were taken to South Huron Hospital before being airlifted to London Health Sciences Centre with non-life-threatening injuries.

Several hours later, at around 10:45 p.m., police were called about a single-vehicle crash into a tree on Crediton Road near Bronson Line.

The driver, and lone occupant of the pickup truck involved, was reportedly trapped in the vehicle with a serious injury. Emergency crews extricated the 43-year-old South Huron resident, and they were later transported to a London hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

OPP said alcohol may have been a factor in both collisions and are continuing to investigate.

Anyone with information about either incident should call Huron OPP at 519-482-1677 or Huron-Perth Crime Stoppers.
