Seaforth unveils new mural

A new mural has been unveiled in Seaforth.

Seaforth was one of six towns to be awarded a new mural as part of a collaborative project between the county and communities where the murals are located. The goal of the project is to enhance the cultural vibrancy of the communities and support ongoing tourism recovery in Huron County through public art.

BIA Secretary Maureen Agar said when she was reading up on the history of Seaforth, she discovered that at one time it was a swamp.

“When people were talking about what they'd like to see in the mural, a lot of people wanted history," said Agar. "I thought a lot of them don't know that it was a swamp at one time. So this was a good way to show them that it was a swamp and out of that swamp, the railway came, and the flour mill, which was one of the biggest in Canada."

Agar said they had a committee of seven people who considered the theme and a number of artists. The artist they chose was Robert Johnson of Hensall.

“He knows Seaforth and a lot of the history of the area and he has done trains," she said. "If you look at the train and see his fine details of the bolts and everything, it's just unbelievable. I'm ecstatic because when people come across the tracks they're just going to... Whoa!”

The two panels of the mural, on the side of the Everspring Farm Limited's north wall, do very conveniently face the railroad tracks that run across Main Street.
