Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) laid a total of 262 charges on Perth County roads over the long weekend.
Officers focused on the "Big 4" factors of serious crashes on Ontario highways, which include impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving and failing to wear a seatbelt.
A breakdown of the "Big 4" charges include:
• Speeding: 195
• Seatbelt Charges: 3
• Stunt Driving: 4
• Impaired Driving: 2
Across the province, police are calling it the most fatal long weekend of the year so far.
The OPP are investigating eight fatalities across the province. Six of those deaths occurred on the road, one involved an off-road incident, and one happened in a boating incident.
The number of "Big 4" charges in Western Ontario include:
• Speeding Charges: 938
• Seatbelt Charges: 52
• Impaired Driving Charges: 39
• Stunt Driving Charges: 28
• Distracted Driving Charges: 9
There was also a heavy focus on the province's Move Over law which singles out drivers that don't slow down and change lanes when in the vicinity of an emergency vehicle with it's lights engaged.
Western Region OPP laid 47 "Move Over" charges over the course of the traffic campaign.
The Civic Holiday Long Weekend traffic initiative ran from Friday, August 4 to Monday, August 7.
