Huron Kinloss council defeated a motion to repeal the existing Community Flag Raising Policy at Wednesday night's meeting.
The motion was brought forward by Coun. Ed McGugan who cited divisiveness over the Pride flag as his motivation.
The meeting began with a delegation from resident Sarah Foster, who spoke in support of flying Pride flags. Other residents turned out to show their support for the 2SLGBTQI+ community as well.
"(Foster) was the one who put in a formal delegation with council just to speak up against what we as taxpayers want to see with our municipality, how they treat people in the community and just the message that it sends," resident Meagan Fair told CKNX NewsToday. "So, it's not a protest, we're coming to a council meeting like any taxpayer would to listen to Sarah and give our presence and show space."
Staff also recommended keeping the current flag policy in place in their report to council, which included correspondence from 13 residents in their report on the flag policy, 11 of which urged them to reject Coun. McGugan's proposal.
Ultimately council did just that, voting to keep the policy as is.
