Saugeen Shores will become the permanent site of The Lakeshore Triathlon.
The 2023 race was held in Saugeen Shores due to road construction interfering with the former race site in Kincardine.
Race Director Sarah Foster said they discussed the decision with participants and volunteers.
"We are excited to start a new chapter for the Lakeshore Triathlon in Saugeen Shores,” Foster said. “We had overwhelming feedback from our race volunteers and participants to keep the race here. We are glad Saugeen Shores is willing to continue to host us.”
The Lakeshore Women’s Triathlon will be hosted at the Port Elgin Main Beach on July 20, 2024. Registration details are being finalized.
“We had an amazing amount of support from both the Town of Saugeen Shores, the business community and citizens who supported our race, so we are excited to keep the race in Saugeen Shores,” Foster said.
The location of the swim at Port Elgin also offers a more sheltered venue, with a higher likelihood that the swim will be held each year. Prior to 2023, the race had run in Kincardine since 2001, missing only two years in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are grateful for the 20 years we were able to run our race in Kincardine,” Foster said. “The Kincardine community was very supportive to us over the years, and we hope our race participants and volunteers from the Kincardine community will continue to support us in Saugeen Shores.”
“The Town is excited to pick up the mantle of host community for this great event,” said Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau. “The race enjoys widespread support from local athletes and residents, as well as our business community. As a regional recreational hub, Saugeen Shores is pleased to see sporting events like this choosing our community.”
The 2023 Lakeshore Women’s Triathlon contributed more than $7,500 to the Saugeen Shores community and surrounding areas. This included $5,000 to the Women’s House Serving Bruce and Grey, $1,000 to Community Living Owen Sound and Area for their Port Elgin branch, $1,000 to Saugeen Shores Lifesaving Club, $1,000 to the Bruce Shrine Club, $1,000 to the Kincardine Rescue Boat and $250 each to the Canadian Cancer Society and Ronald McDonald House.
