The Senate is set to vote on amendments to Bill C-234 on Tuesday afternoon.
Both the Grain Farmers of Ontario and the Ontario Pork have issued news releases urging the Senate to swiftly pass Bill C-234, known as "An Act to amend the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act," a private member's bill introduced by Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb.
The Grain Farmers of Ontario (GFO) emphasized the need for an exemption on fuel used to dry grain, a request they've been making for over five years. The carbon price has been steadily rising, currently at $65 per tonne, with projections to reach $170 per tonne by 2030. The GFO stressed the importance of this exemption for grain farmers who have no alternatives for drying their grain, especially during the ongoing corn harvest.
If the amended version of Bill C-234 is accepted, it will return to the House of Commons. However, there are concerns that it may face delays, particularly if there is a federal election in the coming months.
If Senators reject the amended version, the bill will proceed to the Senate for a third and final reading.
