ABCA issues Flood Outlook and water safety advisory, though major flooding not expected

The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) has issued a Watershed Conditions Statement, focusing on Flood Outlook and Water Safety. The statement, released at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, was delivered by Water Resources Coordinator Davin Heinbuck.

The current weather situation entails steady rainfall throughout the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority watershed, resulting in rainfall totals ranging from 20 to 30 mm. This precipitation is anticipated to conclude by late afternoon today. Some localized areas, particularly in the southern part of the watershed, may experience rainfall totals exceeding 35 mm.

Saturated ground conditions have led to rapid runoff, and river flow forecasts indicate rising watercourse levels into the night. While major flooding is not expected, certain watercourses in the southern region might surpass bank full, posing a slight risk of minor flooding. Any flooding is projected to remain within low-lying undeveloped floodplain areas.

Residents are urged to exercise caution around creeks and rivers, keeping children and pets away from waterways due to slippery and unstable streambanks. Additionally, the extremely cold water temperatures present additional hazards.

The advisory will be in effect until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 30, 2023, unless updated otherwise. The ABCA will continually monitor watershed conditions and provide timely updates if necessary.
