OPP warn scammers are busy in Midwestern Ontario

Perth County OPP are warning about recent scams circulating in the community. Detective Sergeant Adam Seltzer noted OPP have responded to several calls for service relating to some scams over the telephone.

Seltzer said fraudsters call pretending to be a grandchild or a lawyer, to say there's a terrible injury and they need money to pay a bill.

"Other times people are being called and told the bank itself is doing an internal investigation about maybe a teller, involved in some thefts. So a person was told you're gonna have money put in your account. Please take that money out and bring it home, and the bank representative will come to your house to take that money. Don't tell anyone about this because it's an internal investigation," he said.

Seltzer asked residents to beware of these calls.

"These things are scams. These are things that the OPP want you to be very cautious about. And we want you to be slow to respond," Seltzer advised. "We want you to validate with your loved ones. Call your grandchildren. Call people in the family who can validate whether or not people are safe."

Seltzer pointed out that its quite unusual that an official would come to a home to collect money.

"Government agencies like the OPP, or government of Canada or even private industries like lawyers, are very rarely going to attend your house, if at all," he added. "So be very cautious about that. Validate phone calls that you get that ask for money. And if you're confused at all, call the OPP and tell us what's happening, and we'll help you navigate through it."
