St. Marys has been selected to host the triathlon events for the 2024 Ontario Summer Games.
On August 2 and 3, 60 young athletes will compete in swimming, cycling, and running events, showcasing the town’s scenic locations including the quarry and the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.
"This is an incredible opportunity to showcase St. Marys, and we hope all residents will give our visitors a warm welcome," Mayor Al Strathdee said.
To accommodate the triathlon, specific road closures will be in effect from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on August 2 and 3. Queen St. E from Charles St. S to Thomas St. and Water St. S from Queen St. E to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame will be closed. While parking will be restricted in these areas, side streets and municipal lots will remain open. Downtown businesses will operate as usual with accessible sidewalks and patios. A detour route will allow motorists to travel through town, and crossings will be managed to ensure safety.
Residents on the affected streets will have limited driveway access and are encouraged to park on nearby side streets or in the Elgin St. municipal lot. Special arrangements can be made for residents with mobility issues by contacting the Public Works Coordinator.
The triathlon events will feature a Mixed Team Relay on Friday, where teams of four athletes will compete in swimming, biking, and running. The individual races will take place on Saturday with two heats of a Super Sprint distance, determining the winners based on combined times.
