Huron Hospice prepares for 8th Annual Butterfly Release

Huron Hospice is gearing up for its 8th Annual Butterfly Release on Sunday, August 25, 2024 at the Huron Hospice Bender House.

The event, a cherished tradition for Huron County families, offers a heartfelt way to remember loved ones and support the hospice’s vital work.

Participants can purchase Painted Lady Butterflies, Butterfly Bushes, Black-Eyed Susans, and Purple Coneflowers to release or plant in memory of their loved ones. The butterflies, bred at a certified facility near Peterborough, are available for $40 each. Butterfly Bushes are priced at $38, while Black-Eyed Susans and Purple Coneflowers are $25. Orders must be placed by August 1, 2024.

Huron Hospice Executive Director Willy Van Klooster says the butterfly is a universal symbol of transformation.

“It is a beautiful way to honor and remember those we have lost in our community and recognize the important work done at Huron Hospice. We think the gardens at Bender House are an ideal location to release butterflies and remember.”

The commemorative event will be livestreamed and available on YouTube and social media, allowing those who cannot attend in person to participate virtually. Families also have the option to pick up butterflies and release them at a significant location of their choice.

The International Butterfly Breeders Association has endorsed these releases, ensuring they are conducted safely. Research indicates that captive butterflies retain their migratory instincts and do not negatively impact wild populations.
