Disabled boat towed back to safety in Southampton

A boater stranded in a powerless vessel had to be rescued from the waters of the Saugeen River in Southampton.

South Bruce OPP were called about the vessel in distress Tuesday afternoon. The boat had lost power and was reportedly taking on water at the mouth of the river.

Fortunately, no one was hurt as another boat on the water was able to tow it to safety.

Police inspected the vessel and are now reminding boaters to always have a fully charged phone, safety equipment, and lifejackets on board.

"The only lifejacket that will save your life is the one you're wearing," police said in a post to social media.

This is the third rescue involving a disabled boat in waters patrolled by the South Bruce OPP marine unit in the past week. Last Thursday, a sailboat nearly tipped over after hitting the rocks in Lake Huron near Saugeen Shores. Police brought the sailor back to shore without incident. Three days later, another boat began taking on water after hitting a rock and losing power off the coast of Kincardine. OPP, with the help of a Good Samaritan, safely towed that boat back to the Kincardine Marina.
