Pair of suspected impaired drivers stopped in Huron

A Central Huron man and a Londoner will be walking for the next 90 days after Huron OPP stopped two suspected drunk drivers southeast of Clinton and Grand Bend.

An officer spotted a vehicle swerving in and out of the westbound lane on Huron Road near Front Road in Huron East around 11 p.m. on Friday. The vehicle was pulled over and a sobriety test was administered, police said. The driver was arrested after the alcohol screening device registered a fail. He was taken to the police detachment in Clinton where further breath tests allegedly showed the man had more than two times the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

A 32-year-old from Central Huron is charged with impaired driving, as well as offences under the Highway Traffic Act and Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act. He is scheduled to appear in Goderich court in relation to the charge on September 16.

Just a few hours after this incident, Huron OPP stopped another driver suspected of being under the influence.

The vehicle was on Grand Bend Line in the Municipality of South Huron just after 2:30 a.m. on Saturday when its driver is said to have repeatedly flashed the high beam lights at the approaching police cruiser.

The officer stopped the vehicle and after speaking with its driver determined he had consumed alcohol prior to getting behind the wheel, police said. A roadside sobriety test registered a fail and further testing conducted by an OPP qualified breath technician is also alleged to have shown the driver had alcohol in his system that exceeded the legal limit.

A 32-year-old London man is charged with impaired driving and is scheduled to be in Goderich court on September 9.

According to police, both men also had their driver's licence suspended for 90 days and vehicle impounded for a week.
