Local, provincial, and national Chambers of Commerce respond to latest tariffs

The Huron Chamber of Commerce, alongside its provincial and national counterparts, have released statements on the latest tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Canadian goods.

That includes hefty 25 percent tariffs on the auto industry, alongside the reinstated tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum and the pending rollout of a 10 percent “reciprocal” tariff on non-CUSMA imports.

In a joint media release, the Ontario Chamber noted that "retaliatory actions, trade skirmishes, and economic nationalism ultimately reduce competitiveness and discourage innovation and investment."

Meanwhile, the Canadian Chamber warned that the cost of these policies will be "felt by families and communities across the country, not just in the boardroom or on trading floors."

The Huron Chamber of Commerce recently established the Huron Economic Response Task Force, a joint initiative of the Huron Chamber, the Bayfield and Area Chamber of Commerce, and the South Huron Chamber of Commerce to help local businesses during these uncertain economic times.

"While Canada may be temporarily exempt from some of the announced tariffs, the message from Washington is clear: uncertainty is back on the table," said Colin Carmichael, Executive Director of the Huron Chamber of Commerce. "In Huron County, we have manufacturers, agricultural exporters, logistics providers, and small businesses that depend on predictable cross-border trade. When the U.S. signals instability, it puts jobs and investment here at risk."

To help local businesses stay informed, the Huron Chamber of Commerce has produced a Chamber Report entitled U.S. Tariff Status – 3 April 2025.

"In Huron County, we’re already seeing how inflation, supply chain challenges, and labour shortages affect our local businesses," added Carmichael. "Introducing new trade barriers—especially with our closest and most important trading partner—adds unnecessary strain at a time when we need stability and cooperation."
