Grey Bruce OPP officers have arrested and charged two people from Shelburne following a grandparent scam investigation.
Police shared in a media release that on June 24, a 95-year-old Chatsworth woman contacted police claiming she had received a call from a man claiming to be her grandson in alleged distress.
Another male was also on the call posing as a lawyer. The suspects attempted to extort the senior citizen for fake legal fees.
A family member recognized the call as a scam and called police. No money was lost and no financial information was given to the scammers.
Two days later, the senior received another call from a man claiming to be her son, stating they were in a bad accident and needed $58,000 for legal fees. Someone on the call told the senior that someone would be coming to collect the money.
The police were immediately called and they arrested two males when they arrived at the home.
A 28-year-old and 24-year-old from Shelburne have both been charged with fraud over $5,000, and the older suspect was also charged with disguise with intent.
Both accused were released from custody and are scheduled to appear in court on August 7 at the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound.
Police are urging everyone to remain vigilant and careful of scams. Never give out financial information or send money to anyone you don't know, and always double check with a trusted family member or friend if contacted by someone claiming to be a family member.
