First donations from Olivia Rourke Foundation honour teen's vision for cancer support

The Olivia Rourke Foundation has made its first charitable donations, honouring the life and legacy of 17-year-old Olivia Rourke, who was tragically killed in a car crash on May 23, 2025, along with three of her softball teammates and their coach.

Inspired by her mother’s breast cancer diagnosis, Olivia had begun planning the Hoops for Hope 3-on-3 basketball fundraiser before her death. Determined to see her vision realized, staff at Walkerton District Community School and community volunteers stepped up to host the event in her memory on June 7.

More than 40 teams and 160 athletes took part in the tournament, helping raise significant funds that have now been donated to two causes close to Olivia’s heart: Brightshores Health System's Owen Sound Cancer Centre, where Olivia's mother received treatment, and the Canadian Cancer Society, to support national cancer research and prevention.

"These donations represent Olivia’s love for her family and her desire to make the world better for others," said a family spokesperson.

Beth Morris of Brightshores called the gift "a powerful tribute to her spirit," and the Canadian Cancer Society’s Allison Taylor-Misener said the foundation’s support will help "champion world-leading outcomes in cancer research, prevention, treatment, and support."

Funds from the tournament have also helped launch the Olivia Rourke Foundation, which will continue her legacy by supporting youth-led initiatives, advancing women in sport, and funding cancer-related charities.
