Grey County will support the continuation of two transit routes until next September, when a new regional system could be in place.
At Thursday's meeting, council received a report from staff requesting that the Grey Transit Route 2 between Dundalk and Orangeville and Guelph Owen Sound Transit (GOST) both be extended until August 31, 2026.
Manager of Community Transportation Stephanie Stewart said there would be no additional financial impact for extending both.
"The province has approved OTIF Funding to support both these services, and staff have confirmed from contributing partners (County of Dufferin, Wellington County and City of Owen Sound) that they will also support this idea. There are no further financial requests, outside of the previous Grey County levy request of $145,000 for 2026 budget considerations," she said.
The new regional transit system between Grey County, Bruce County, Dufferin County, Wellington County and Saugeen Mobility Transit could be in place by September 1, 2026.
Councillor Scott Gregg said it was good these services could remain until then.
"The GOST has been a great service benefitting people up and down Hwy 6, I've rode it many times. It's good to see the revenues included as well but the connectivity has been terrific and valued in the community for sure," he said.
The GOST has seen ridership grow to over 12,600 people a year in 2024. Staff are projecting transit will generate $83,700 of ticket revenue for the current year.
