Brockton begins work on scattering garden

The Walkerton Cemetery could have a space for families to spread ashes by next year.

The Municipality of Brockton has started the process of bringing a scattering garden to the cemetery. The garden would be a designated area where cremated remains can be respectfully scattered.

At this week's meeting, staff brought forward a report with options on how one could be implemented locally, with a target opening of 2027.

Councillor Greg McLean, who made the initial notice of motion to pursue the idea, said it was nice to see that it is feasible.

"I know on a personal level, with my mom passing away a couple of months ago, I'm working with the Town of Halton Hills," he said. "Having my mom scattered there and looking at the whole process and certainly getting familiar with the costing, I would look forward to having something that we can have locally that can would those same needs."

Staff already identified areas of the cemetery the garden could be installed and determined that a scattering rights model offers greater flexibility, and lower costs to residents.

Councillor Steve Travale said the plan looked good, but they need to be wary of spending when a detailed cost estimate comes back to council.

"The only thing for me is obviously the costing and getting more information on that before driving ahead," he said. "I think we do need to tread carefully, maybe it's partnering with a horticultural group. We don't want sort of a major landscaping deal that was akin to the Market Garden. I think we want to be prudent, but obviously have something that's tasteful and respectful, so just being mindful of potential costs."

The next steps include updating the cemetery bylaw and plan, as well as necessary public consultation, before staff will bring back detailed cost estimates to council. The report noted that costs will vary based on the size and complexity of the garden, the selected location, and whether the project is implemented in phases.

All costs will be incorporated in next year's budget.
