With municipal elections just over a month away, outgoing and retiring North Perth Mayor Todd Kasenberg is reflecting on his time in office.
Kasenberg says he's proud of many things that have been accomplished, including firming up the local asset management plan. He says that has become a key aspect for all municipal governments to keep on top of eventual costs for building or replacing infrastructure.
"There is still a massive infrastructure gap in any municipal government in Ontario. There's no municipal government that's got it all laid out and ready and the money in the bank for all that lies ahead because we never planned that way before," Kasenberg explained.
Kasenberg notes that now, many large projects need to be planned out for many years before they can realistically happen, especially in smaller centres. He adds that improving social services and economic development has been a key part of his mayorship. That includes, among the more recent achievements, the establishment of the United Way enhanced services centre in downtown Listowel, which is also the site of the new Music Hall Apartments affordable housing units above the centre itself.
As mayor, Kasenberg put a staunch focus on improving social infrastructure, but also solidifying economic improvements, as well, including a heavy emphasis on supporting the area's agricultural sector.
"I think we are probably the only community in Ontario that has a dedicated Agriculture Co-ordinator who is employed by the municipality and is supporting the farmers and agri-food in developing their businesses and finding funds and grant opportunities for them, as well," he said.
Also, Kasenberg he's very happy to see the long awaited dog park finally nearing a realistic end date, despite a long process with many challenges.
"We now have a potential funder, council has now given direction just at this week's meeting, and I can't help but say I'm really thrilled and pleased around that, otherwise it was going to potentially be a regret, right?"
As he prepares to exit municipal politics, Kasenberg left a message for the next council and the community he has proudly served for two terms.
"When I came to office, I coined that term 'North Perth Proud' and in my second term, I coined the term, and I think it's still relevant, 'North Perth Awesome'. If there's a message I would send it's always be attentive to the humanity of our community, stay rooted in our values, but always keep our eyes looking to the future," Kasenberg shared proudly.
After Kasenberg retires, longtime Deputy Mayor Doug Kellum will take over as mayor after the October 26 elections, as he is running unopposed in North Perth.
