Brightshores Health System spotlights safety

Brightshores Health System is using Canadian Patient Safety Week to shine a spotlight on the everyday practices and new initiatives keeping local patients safe.

Running from October 26 to 30, the national awareness week centers on the theme "What Shapes Safer Care," highlighting how communication, teamwork, and continuous improvement form the foundation of a safe medical environment.

While hospital staff work behind the scenes to streamline operations, officials stress that patients and their loved ones also play a vital role in preventing medical errors. Families are encouraged to take an active stance in their healthcare journey by asking questions, understanding treatment plans, and speaking up about any concerns.

“Our teams are committed to providing safe, high-quality care and partnering with patients so they feel informed, supported and involved in decisions about their care,” said Diana Ryman, Director of Quality and Safety at Brightshores Health System. “When healthcare providers, patients and families work together, we can improve safety and outcomes for everyone.”

To back up that commitment, Brightshores has recently rolled out several key technological upgrades. A new regional medication-dispensing network was introduced to ensure correct dosages are given at precise times, while hospital laboratories have added barcode tracking for test specimens to minimize diagnostic mix-ups.

Alongside these technical advancements, frontline teams across all six Brightshores hospital sites continue to focus on fundamental safety measures, including daily fall prevention strategies and clear bedside communication.
