North Stars Prepare For Season Opener

The Owen Sound North Stars begin their Junior B Lacrosse season on the road Saturday night in Hamilton.

Head coach Keith Peer is hoping that this season will build off of and exceed last season.

"We got a good mix with a lot of returning guys." Peer said. "I helped with the Midget team last year and we got some good young players coming in too."

Peer says the main goal for this season is to make the playoffs. Last season the North Stars missed out on the post season by a single point. He hopes to put a speedy team on the floor this year to get the job done. He says that applies to every member of the roster.

"The game of lacrosse has really changed over the years." He said. "You can't just put the big guys at the back to defend and the small guys up front."

In their bid to break into the post season, one thing that can help those chances is if star player Brenden Welsh is able to return. After leading the team with 100 points last year, he is running with the Orangeville Northmen Junior A team.

"We're hoping to get Brenden back, it would be nice to have him for one more year at junior B."

As for the players who are in camp, anyone taking a look at the roster will see some familiar names. This is because a number of local junior hockey players also play lacrosse. Some of those names include Listowel Cyclone Jordan Caskenette along with Walkerton Hawks CJ Arthur and Josh Deyell. Welsh is also played Junior C for the Hawks this year.

"We always say we could beat the other team in a hockey game." Peer joked.

Starting with Saturday's game against Hamilton, Owen Sound opens the year with 3 straight road games. The home opener is Thursday May 7th at the Harry Lumley Bayshore against Guelph.
