Hornets Sting First In Schmalz Cup

The Alliston Hornets took advantage of a couple of turnovers and won the opening game of the Schmalz Cup quarter-final series 4-3 over Kincardine.

The Bulldogs were able to fight off some early nerves in the first period but at the 8:51 mark of the first period, Mac Flewelling picked off a pass up the middle and snapped a shot by Kincardine goal Jacob Hutchings to open the scoring. Just two minutes later, Kincardine tied it on a 5-on-3 power play goal on a point shot from Eric Langridge. Kincardine could not score another on the 5-on-4 and just after the penalty expired, Alliston was able to create an opportunity on an odd man rush and score the go ahead goal and leave the ice with a 2-1 lead.

In the second period, Kincardine forward Patrick Wiejak took a feed from Gerrit Satosek, as the Bulldogs' captain won the draw clean in the offensive end, and Wiejak scored high glove side from the slot to knot the game at two.

Early in the third, Alliston forward Stephen Nosad took advantage of a bobble at the Kincardine blue line and scored the go ahead goal. Nosad would score another goal when he flipped the puck towards the net from the boards and it deflected of a leg. That gave Alliston a two goal lead.

Kincardine kept the pressure on and was rewarded with a goal with the extra attacker late in the third to make it 4-3 but that's how the game would end.

Kincardine out shot Alliston 28-25 in the game and scored the only power play goal.

Game 2 goes Saturday night in Alliston at 6:30pm.
