Two local hockey teams represent area well

The Sacred Heart boys' high school hockey team are gold medal champions.

The team won the OFSAA 'A/AA' championship 3-2 in overtime over Iona from Mississauga Thursday afternoon.

Sacred Heart came in as the 5th seed in the 16 team tournament.

After going 3-0 in the round robin, Sacred Heart beat St. Mary out of Coburg 3-2 in the quarter-finals and Jean Vanier in the semi-final by a 3-2 score in overtime.

In the final, the Crusaders would face-off against the 15th seed of the tournament, Iona, after the Mississauga team upset number one seed King City 5-2.

Iona opened the scoring 2:36 into the first period but Sacred Heart scored the only goal in the second period.

The teams exchanged goals in the third to set up overtime after finishing 2-2 in regulation.

Sacred Heart's Kyle Durrer finished what he started by scoring the OT winner. He had scored the team's opening goal as well.

Joshua Lorenz scored the other goal for the team.

At the OFSAA 'A/AA' girls' high school hockey tournament in Midland, the St. Anne's Eagles lost a close one in the bronze medal game.

The team fell 3-1 to St. David of Kitchener in the semi-final putting the Eagles' squad into the bronze medal game against Esc L'Escale, a school east of Ottawa.

While creating more chances than their opponents, St. Anne's lost 3-2 with Hannah Tait and Jaymee Nolan scoring for the Crusaders.

The team went 25-3 this season.
