Windsor-Essex residents will walk, run or ride to commemorate the mission of one of Canada's greatest heroes.
The annual Terry Fox Run takes place in communities across Canada on Sunday, including Kingsville and Tecumseh. The run celebrates the legacy of Terry Fox, an athlete from British Columbia who lost a leg to a rare form of cancer as a teenager. To raise money for cancer research, he undertook the Marathon of Hope in 1980, with the goal to run across Canada on an artificial leg. Fox became a national hero in the process but was forced to stop his run near Thunder Bay, Ontario when his cancer spread to his lungs. Fox died in 1981, with his funeral broadcast live on national television.
The run is open to everyone regardless of age or athletic ability. There is no entry fee or minimum donation, but all participants are asked to supply a donation or do some fundraising.
