The Windsor Police Service confirms an officer shot a suspect in downtown Windsor Monday afternoon.
Officers responded to the area of Wyandotte Street and Ouellette Avenue at around 2:20 p.m. for a call involving a person with a weapon. The suspect was shot by a Windsor Police officer.
"When officers arrived they located an adult male in the street with a weapon," a release from Windsor police read. "During the course of the interaction with the subject, a Windsor Police Service officer discharged their firearm. The subject was transported to hospital with what are believed to be life-threatening-injuries."
The Special Investigations Unit has been notified and will be taking over the investigation. A release from the SIU said that the suspect was a 70-year-old man. The agency said one Windsor officer used a conductive energy weapon (taser), while another shot him.
No other injuries have been reported.
Police continue to ask the public to avoid the area however they say there is no risk to public safety.

The provincial police watchdog is called any time an officer discharges a weapon at an individual.
