City inside workers give union strike mandate

The union that represents City of Windsor inside workers has a good strike mandate should talks fail to produce a collective agreement.

Seventy-seven per cent of CUPE Local 543's members voted in favour of strike action.

They've been working without a contract since the end of December, and the next time negotiators for the city sit down with the bargaining team with CUPE Local 543 is October 3.

Local President David Petten says the biggest stumbling blocks so far are focused on work-life balance and pay-equity. The union is also looking for improvements in compensation and benefits.

"We have presented reasonable proposals throughout, but have had no success in resolving those major issues," said Petten.

He said about 70 per cent of the local's members are female.

The last time inside workers walked off the job in Windsor was in 2009 when CUPE Locals 543 and 82 were on strike for 15 weeks.

Outside workers, represented by CUPE Local 82, ratified a collective agreement in May.

The number of members represented by CUPE Local 543 fluctuates seasonally, but can number up to 1,300.
