Windsor Regional Hospital has a new piece of equipment that is improving patient outcomes with gastrointestinal issues.
The Endoscopic Ultrasound Machine has been up and running since February. It combines a high-frequency ultrasound probe with an endoscope to examine the wall of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, rectum, and pancreas.
"This machine allows us to make a more accurate diagnosis and streamline their care and therapy and treatment more accurately so that they do get the benefit of the best possible treatment," said Dr. Sabeena Misra.
The machine was $430,000 to purchase. It was purchased for the hospital with the help of the Windsor Regional Hospital Foundation.
Windsor Regional Hospital expects to use the machine one 2-3 cases a week or 140 cases annually.
Previously, all patients needing this service were transferred to London or Toronto and often had to wait up to a year for the procedure.
“This will help reduce stress and anxiety for the patient, help improve diagnosis and improve patient outcomes,” said Dr. Misra.
