Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara was honoured with an award for his work on shoreline flooding and erosion.
McNamara is part of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, a group of mayors that promotes access to clean, safe, and affordable water for all residents.
As part of a committee on coastal resilience, McNamara led the group in creating a vision for better protecting communities from shoreline flooding and erosion.
Because of this work, McNamara was awarded to Ontario Member of the Year Award.
“It is an honour to receive the Ontario Member of the Year Award from the Cities Initiative for my ongoing work to promote coastal resilience across the basin,” said Mayor McNamara. “As a town located on the shore of Lake St. Clair that has experienced severe flooding, our community is directly experiencing the impacts of climate change. I look forward to continuing working with mayors across the basin to ensure that all levels of government make the contributions necessary to keep communities safe along the Great Lakes.”
This year, McNamara presented a resolution calling on the federal government to undertake a coastal resiliency study along the Canadian side of the Great Lakes to identify the impacts of climate change on the shorelines and identify solutions to protect coastal communities across Ontario.
