New Record Low Set In Sarnia

A number of records have tumbled across southern Ontario in this latest cold spell, including a new low set in Sarnia Monday morning.

According to Environment Canada the air temperature at Chris Hadfield Airport dropped to -23.1 C (-9 F), breaking the previous mark of -20.3 C (-4 F) set in 2011.

Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says it looks like these much colder than normal temperatures will likely stick around for the rest of the work week.

Coulson says a bit of relief may come this weekend with a forecast high -5 C (23 F) expected Saturday and - 2 C (28 F) Sunday.

But then he says, unfortunately it looks like the cold air will return after that.

Coulson says both the Canadian and American models seem to agree that colder than normal temperatures are to be expected throughout the Great Lakes basin into at least the first half of March.

The extreme cold warning remains posted for Sarnia-Lambton with wind chills to reach the - 35 C ( - 31 F) to - 30 C ( - 22 F) mark again tonight.

People planning to be outdoors should dress appropriately and exercise caution. Exposed skin may freeze in as little as 10 minutes.
