The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership (SLEP) has entered into a contract with Strategy Corp to develop a government relations strategy designed at increasing provincial investment in Sarnia-Lambton. At a SLEP Board meeting with Strategy Corp Monday morning, issues were raised about not having local voices heard in Queen's Park. Mallay explains some of the weaknesses he believes will be targeted. "The lack of diversification within our community, the concern about where the economy is going, depending on who you talk to electricity pricing," says Mallay. Lambton College President & CEO Judith Morris also highlighted issues with their denied health building approval and the need to attract international immigrants. Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Rory Ring believes many industry application processes are unjust, and wants reduced industry power rates during times of operation. While the Wynne government faces challenges with jobs, deficit, and economic activity, the SLEP board felt that Sarnia has all those opportunities that could help solve the problem.
General Manager George Mallay says Strategy Corp meets with county councilors and industry/community representatives on Monday as well. "The project is focused on looking at ways on how we can work effectively and cooperatively with the Ontario government." The next steps are to work with Strategy Corp to identify a strategic plan that will ask for government solutions to problems brought forth at Monday's meetings.
