Environment Canada issued a heat warning for Sarnia-Lambton at mid afternoon Saturday.
The national weather agency says maximum temperatures near or above 30 C (86 F) and minimum temperatures near or above 20 C (68 F) are expected through Monday.
Peak humidex values near 40 C (104 F) are forecast for Sunday and Labour Day Monday. These conditions may produce much discomfort for those who may not have access to a cool or air-conditioned place. It will remain very humid for the first day of school Tuesday, with maximum temperatures in the high twenties.
While extreme heat can put everyone at risk from heat illnesses, health risks are greatest for:
- older adults - infants and young children - people with chronic illnesses such as breathing difficulties, heart conditions or psychiatric illnesses - people who work in the heat - people who exercise in the heat - people without access to air conditioning and - homeless people.
Drink plenty of liquids especially water before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration. Take a break from the heat by spending a few hours in a cool place. It could be a tree-shaded area, swimming facility or an air-conditioned spot such as a public building, shopping mall, grocery store, place of worship or public library.
Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
