Charges Laid At Green Electron

The Toronto company building the Green Electron gas-fed power plant in St.Clair Township is facing two charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The labour ministry says a summons was issued Friday to Greenfield South Power Corporation for alleged worker safety and training violations at the Oil Springs Line construction site.

The company is to appear in Sarnia court October 9 to answer to the charges.

Ministry spokesperson William Lin says seven work orders remaining outstanding at the site including two stop work orders to protect workers from energized electrical equipment, installations and conductors.

Since April 2013, the Ministry says it's written over 200 orders for a variety of reasons including live electrical panels with no covers, sub-standard scaffolding and inadequate ventilation.

Over 200 unionized tradespeople held a protest recently complaining of poor work practices and unsafe working conditions.

Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey used the first Question Period of the fall legislative session Monday to press the Wynne government on safety concerns at the Green Electron plant. Labour Minister Kevin Flynn said the ministry will use every enforcement tool available to get compliance at the plant.

The power plant project was relocated to St. Clair Township after Ontario’s liberal government stopped work in Mississauga in advance of the 2011 provincial election.
