Petrolia is showing its support for the LGBT community through its first ever Pride event.
Sarnia Pride Alliance, Rebound Spectrum and Kids Help Phone groups setup information booths at the Petrolia Library on Tuesday.
Sarnia Pride Alliance Spokeswoman Christine Desrochers says the event is to celebrate the diversity Petrolia has in its community.
"We target a younger audience just because we feel that that presence is very helpful to teenagers and younger adults that might be struggling with some of these issues," says Desrochers, at her brightly coloured, rainbow filled booth.
"We have Sarnia Pride Alliance t-shirts, pride flags, and candy," says Desrochers. "We also have a lot of brochures for local events and local organizations that support the LGBTQ community in Sarnia-Lambton.
Event Facilitator Liz Welsh says a large turnout of about 50 people is expected to attend the evening's speaker series.
"We have a minister coming and talking about faith in the LGBTQ community, a couple of local people that are going to talk about growing up in their communities. Also I have a grad student, her specialist is on intersex, and in addition the girl from Rebound Spectrum program is going to do a LGBTQ 101 to start us off."
"We want to make sure that everyone knows the library is a resource for information. It's a safe place for everyone to come."
Welsh hints another Pride speaker series event could be in the works for spring 2016.
