Most Crash Prone City Intersection

Sarnia police have ranked the Exmouth St. and Indian Rd. intersection as the worst for collisions in 2015.

The busy multi-lane crossing was the scene of 16 out of 192 incidents so far this year.

Police Chief Phil Nelson says he's not surprised.

"Let's not forget that Exmouth is one of the major east to west corridors, as is London Rd.," says Chief Nelson. "When you hit those major intersections, especially when you have multi-lanes, you have to be aware of the traffic around you."

The East St. N., Exmouth St. intersection is a close second with 15 incidents occurring this year. London Rd. and Murphy Rd. is third worst with 14 incidents.

COLLISIONS

Police have responded to 1,086 motor vehicle collisions, up 66 from October statistics in 2014.

Incidents in parking lots accounted for 223 of those collisions, followed by the second highest number at intersections.

The report says collisions were generally higher in the winter months and peak at rush hour times, however, the majority of them, 769, were in clear conditions.

Statistics show there has been 13 collisions so far involving pedestrians, 22 incidents with cyclists, and 20 involving alcohol or drugs.

Police Chief Phil Nelson reminds motorists to be aware of their surroundings, to slow down, and pay attention while driving.

BUSY YEAR FOR SARNIA POLICE

Sarnia police have received over 20,391 calls for service in the first ten months of 2015, an increase of 1,355 calls compared to the same time last year.

Police Chief Phil Nelson says higher statistics has put a strain on the overtime budget.

"[We were] never expecting to lose 11 officers throughout the year with major injuries and illness too," says Nelson. "Good news is they're back at work now."

Officers dealt with two homicides so far this year, compared to none last year.

Thefts and break and enter statistics are up in most areas, with a focus on the "other" category including sheds.

Although domestic and family dispute numbers are down, the report shows an increase in spousal assaults at 136 calls for service.
