Promoting Holiday Fire Safety

Sarnia Fire and Rescue wants to ensure a safe holiday season for everyone.

Safety Educator Mike Otis says during this time of year they often see an increase in the number of house fires.

He says the top day for fires due to unattended candles is Christmas Day followed by New Year's Day and Christmas Eve.

"You never want to leave candles unattended. If you are using real candles, we say 'blow out before you go out', meaning never leave them burning when you leave," says Otis. "Battery operated candles are a good substitute."

"If you do use real candles, put them in a sturdy holder that can't be knocked over, reached by children or pets."

Residents are reminded to make sure smoke alarms are working properly and to turn off all tree and display lights before retiring for the night.
