Putting Accessibility First

The Lochiel Kiwanis Community Centre has become more accessible to the community. At a recognition event Tuesday, Sarnia Kiwanis Club President Bob Lutz says they have installed two automatic door openers at the building on College Ave. N.

It will be used by various clients including those with mobility issues using walkers or wheelchairs, and mothers with strollers attending the St. Clair Child and Youth Services Family Drop In centre. Lutz says they're very thankful for MP Marilyn Gladu's efforts in receiving money from the federal government's Enabling Accessibility in Communities Fund. "We put together a budget for the project, they provided funding. I think it was about $4,300. Kiwanis matched up with another $4,000 and we had some volunteered service from one of the contractors," says Lutz, noting the overall project cost a little under $10,000.

Lambton County Warden Bev MacDougall and Margaret Misek-Evans were also recognized for their efforts. The building also has an elevator and had installed two accessible washrooms upstairs a couple years ago with help from Ontario Trillium funds.
