Victim Impact Statements At Province Sentencing

Family, friends and colleagues of Joanne Underhill delivered 17 victim impact statements during a nearly three-hour sentencing hearing at Sarnia courthouse Friday.

Justice Bruce Thomas then sentenced 56-year-old James Province to life in prison with no eligibility for parole for 25 years in the death of his estranged wife.

During a prepared statement Province told the court, although he accepts responsibility for her death, he maintains that it was an accident.

Joanne's brother-in-law, Mark Widner, says he was disappointed with Province's lack of remorse.

"Just a ridiculous statement, I mean, someone just fell on a knife three times, unbelievable, but it's not surprising, he never took ownership or responsibility as long as I've known him," says Widner.

"I'm disappointed, I thought maybe he had the time to man up but he didn't."

Widner says Joanne's memory will continue to live on through her children.

The 50-year-old mother of three died of a stab wound in her Twin Lakes Dr. home in September 2012.

A jury found Province guilty of first degree murder in December.
