Concerns were expressed about recent staff turnover and a deteriorating work environment at city hall during intense debate at Sarnia council's meeting Monday afternoon.
Councillor Brian White's motion, which he described as 'symbolic' in nature, questioned the departure of three senior managers in recent years. Council voted 6-2 to use the tools available to it, to help stabilize the environment at city hall.
"Recognize the fact that we have these tools at our disposal," says White, "and not let another day go by without acknowledging the fact that we're seeing something potentially unusual."
Councillor Mike Kelch did not support the motion, noting there were no specifics on tools or actions moving forward. He says it's 'sort of' like a vote of non-confidence against Mayor Mike Bradley, who was not present at the meeting.
"I wouldn't pass this motion on any of you, anymore than I would pass it on anyone who's not here today."
Councillor Dave Boushy was the only other vote against, calling the motion an overreaction. There has been a turnover of several senior staff over the past couple of years. Most recently, City Clerk Nancy Wright-Laking left to become the clerk in Lambton Shores, and Planning Director Jane Cooper announced her early retirement.
